Blog 3: Appalachia

Blog 3: Appalachia

Many Ohio University students, as well as people who don't live in or around the area labeled "Appalachian" consider it a poor, uneducated part of our country. The University itself seems to be disconnected from the town. There are some organizations that involve the town and the campus, but they are more obscure and students either don't know about them or don't join. The stigma surrounding Appalachia is known as "Appalachian Fatalism," A term that was put under scrutiny in John O'Brien's At Home in the Heart of Appalachia. The book examined the Appalachian world, and while it undid many stereotypes surrounding the area, some stereotypes exist for a reason.
